Italian learning resources for vocabulary you can recall
Italian learning resources each handle a different part of the language. A vocabulary card can teach you that palla means "ball"; listening practice helps you hear the doubled consonant that separates it from pala, "shovel." That difference changes the word. Vocabulum X concentrates on frequent Italian vocabulary and remembering it. Audio, reading and grammar practice help you recognize those words when they appear together in a sentence.
Italian has a small core that appears again and again
Italian linguist Tullio De Mauro studied the words people use across conversation, print, literature and other kinds of text. In his updated basic vocabulary, about 2,000 fundamental words accounted for 86% of the word occurrences in the material he examined. His broader basic vocabulary contained about 7,000 words, including words people readily know even when they occur less often.
The 86% figure counts repeated words, so it cannot tell you how much of a particular conversation you would understand. It does show why the order of study has an effect. A common word can turn up in a message, a film and a conversation on the same day. A less frequent word may take much longer to appear again.
Vocabulum X teaches the 10,000 most common Italian words in frequency order. You begin with the first 1,000, then work through four further levels. This gives you a defined route beyond a beginner word list. You can still learn words tied to your family, work or interests as you meet them elsewhere; those personal words serve a different purpose from a general frequency list.
Recall changes from one day to the next
Seeing an Italian word and its English translation together can make it feel familiar. The harder test comes when the Italian word appears alone and you have to remember the meaning. Vocabulum X gives you 30 seconds on each flashcard to decide whether you know it, then shows you the translation.
The time you take adds information to your answer. Remembering a word almost at once and finding it near the end of the timer lead to different review schedules. A word you miss returns soon. If the translation shows that your first answer was mistaken, you can correct it; you can also record an interruption during the timer. The schedule is based on the recall you demonstrated, including those corrections.
You choose 10 to 100 new Italian words a day. Reviews of words you have already studied are added whenever they come due. If you are also working through an audio course or grammar book, choose a new-word target that leaves time for both. Lowering that target will slow the arrival of new cards while your due reviews continue.
Choosing among Italian language learning apps

After reviewing your words, listen to a short Italian lesson and read its text if one is available. Notice which words you recalled immediately and which ones you recognized only after hearing the whole sentence. For pala and palla, listen to the length of the consonant as well as the meaning. That is work a vocabulary review and a listening lesson can do together.
The next Vocabulum X level opens once you have reviewed every word in the current level for the first time. Earlier words keep returning when due, leaving you free to continue through the vocabulary while you practice using it elsewhere.
